The new California Board of Accountancy regulations that require a minimum of 20 hours of CPE per year (12 hours of technical), becomes effective for license renewals on or after Jan 1, 2012; while the new ethics requirement, which is included in the same batch of changes to the regs, is effective for license renewals on or after Jan. 1, 2010.

This is how it looks in practice: a CPA who needs to renew her license by Jan. 31, 2012, must take a minimum of 20 hours of CPE starting the first year of that renewal cycle, which starts Feb. 1, 2010.
