Many of the names from the first Corporate 100 list are found a decade later on these pages. Businesses such as Arctic Slope Regional Corp., Lynden Inc. and Usibelli Coal Mine Inc. continue to be key to Alaska's economy.

Some of the names below have closed their doors or merged with others, and so are no longer a part of the newer listing. Carr Gottstein Foods, Lamonts Apparel and National Bancorp of Alaska Inc. are good examples.

There are the groups that have a weaker presence in the state's economy, though often not by choice--the most notable of which are fish processors and timber companies. Some, such as Fred Meyer and Kmart Corp., simply chose to no longer participate in our survey.
