Mark your calendars for TEI's Annual Conference scheduled for October 31 through November 2, 2011 in San Francisco. The three-day conference will be held at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in downtown San Francisco and will feature dynamic speakers from law firms, accounting firms, and government. "With talk of tax reform and transparency swirling during this period of unprecedented budgetary pressures locally, nationally, and internationally, it has never been more important or difficult to remain current on matters affecting our tax departments," said TEI President Paul O'Connor. "This year's Annual Conference provides an unparalleled opportunity to learn from experts and gain insight helpful in keeping our companies on course."

With many companies filing their first Schedules UTP this September, the Annual Conference will provide a chance to share experiences and plan for the future. To that end, the conference will kick-off with a plenary session entitled "Schedule UTP Compliance" focusing on lessons learned and best practices drawing from taxpayer experience with the new form around the country. Ashby Corum and Rusty Thomas from KPMG LLP will present this session moderated by Don Rath of Synopsis, Inc. and Chair of the Institute's Financial Reporting Committee.

Other U.S. federal tax issues addressed at the conference include a review of repair and maintenance regulations, recommendations on utilizing losses and credits impacted by the Code's limitation provisions, and due diligence issues that commonly arise in mergers and acquisitions. The Canadian Commodity Tax Committee will team up with the State and Local Committee to host a lively debate on whether state sales taxes or the Canadian GST provide for a superior tax system.
