It seems fitting that the Native regional corporation that physically reaches the farthest into the Pacific Ocean should also have the largest operating area. For The Aleut Corp. that means not only operating in Alaska but also doing business on an international scale through its subsidiaries, such as Space Mark Inc., Akima Corp., Aleut Enterprises Corp., TAC Services Inc. and Alaska Trust Co.

The Aleut Corp. settlement land holdings stretch from Point Moller on the Alaska Peninsula to the western tip of Atka Island in the Aleutian Chain, including the Aleutian, Shumagin and Pribilof islands. The corporation is one of the 13 regional corporations formed under the 1972 Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. In the settlement, the corporation received $19.5 million and was entitled to 66,000 acres of surface lands and 1.57 million acres of subsurface estate.

To provide value for its more than 3,000 shareholders, the corporation has invested in several main business industries to include real estate, government operations/maintenance contracting, aggregate sales and marketable securities.

Space Mark's Wide Reach

The corporation has widened its operating area outside of Alaska through its subsidiary Space Mark, which currently employees nearly 900 people and has 20 projects internationally. The company specializes in facilities and systems operations and maintenance.

Space Mark has contracts in locations such as the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado; Kennedy Space Center in Florida; Vandenberg Air Force Base, NASA Operations Support Services in California; Christchurch, New Zealand; and McMurdo Station, Antarctica. Closer to home, Space Mark manages support operations at Adak and Kodiak.

Founded in 1986 and acquired by The Aleut Corporation in 1990, Space Mark has become a recognized leader in the small business operations and the maintenance contractor market. It has a highly trained and dedicated staff who offers a variety of services including launch operations, payload processing support, airfield operations, security, environmental cleanup, transportation, food services, administrative telephone systems and logistics systems.
