Texas AG sues CVS, RadioShack.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has filed lawsuits against two large U.S. corporations--CVS/ Caremark Corp. and RadioShack--for carelessly disposing of sensitive customer data.

According to Abbott's court action, CVS dumped hundreds of customer records--including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, prescription information, and credit card numbers--behind a store in Liberty, Texas.

He said the large drugstore chain violated Texas' Identity Theft Enforcement and Protection Act, a 2005 law requiring businesses to protect customer records containing sensitive information. He said the law authorizes penalties of up to $50,000 per violation for businesses. He also charged CVS with violating chapter 35 of Texas' business and commercial code, which requires businesses to maintain procedures for retaining and disposing of customers'...
