The Institute's State and Local Tax Committee has completed plans for the 2003 State and Local Tax Course to be held April 28-May 2 on the campus of Michigan State University. The five-day course, long a mainstay of TEI's curriculum, has been significantly modified--based on input received from students and faculty--to improve its structure and flow.

The S&L course will feature presentations from highly qualified private practitioners and seasoned tax executives, as well as a series of interactive breakout sessions, and will focus on the practical. Following a context-setting session on the constitutional limitations on state tax jurisdiction, students will participate in three different workshops during the week: one on sales and use taxation (including e-commerce issues and developments such as the Streamlined Sales Tax Project), a second on income and franchise taxation, and a third on tax compliance and controversies. The course will include sessions on gross receipts, capital, and property taxation, as well as professionalism and ethics, acquisitions and corporate restructurings, the effective use of the state legislative process, and incentives. Between 30 and 35 CPE credits will be available for the course.
