TEI adds two new chapters: and then there were 56.

From the far north to America's breadbasket, TEI members have continued to engage like never before. In Alaska and Oklahoma, this energy has produced two new chapters--the Alaska Chapter and the Oklahoma City Chapter. Adding the two chapters brings the total Institute chapter count to 56. "The Institute's expansion in these two important regions provides yet another example of the continuing value of TEI membership," said TEI President Paul O'Connor. "Despite the slow economic recovery, our membership has remained vibrant and engaged."

North to the Future

Alaska adopted its state motto "North to the Future" in 1967, one hundred years after the United States purchased the territory from Russia for $7.2 million. This motto also describes TEI member David E. Steven's move to Alaska a little more than a year ago from Portland, Oregon.

Mr. Stevens had always been an active TEI member serving in chapter, regional, and Institute-level positions for much of the past decade. Although he maintained his TEI membership in the Portland Chapter after moving to Anchorage, he saw the potential for a vibrant new chapter in Alaska to meet the networking, education, and advocacy needs of tax executives resident there.

Meetings with in-house tax professionals working in Alaska supported Mr. Stevens's theory. Indeed, in March of this year, two partners from the law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP flew from Chicago and Washington to Anchorage to make a presentation at one of those meetings. That potential for participation by local members and the Institute's sponsors, along with the travel necessary for members in Alaska to attend TEI meetings in the lower 48, persuaded the Institute's...
