"Hot for Teachers" (by Jonathan Schorr, July/August) highlighted the real importance a quality teacher can make in the school experience of a child. Making my ability to teach my students a part of what determines my pay has always sounded fine to me. But the idea seemed terrifying to many teachers, including those with years off experience. Teachers should be held accountable. Ultimately, though, it comes down to an individual teacher's willingness to work hard to be the teacher his or her students need. John Kerry is right. Any teacher unwilling or unable to do that should not be in a classroom.
