Teach Yourself to Eat Healthfully.

Most Americans believe nutrition is important to health, yet only four in 10 say they are doing all they can to eat healthfully, according to a survey by The American Dietetic Association (ADA), Chicago, Ill. What is keeping them from doing what they know they should? Fear of giving up favorite foods, confusion and frustration over nutrition studies and reports, and the belief that a balanced diet takes too much time rank as top inhibitors to healthful eating.

"Changing Americans' behaviors and attitudes of nutrition and health issues is a challenge dietitians face every day," indicates Dallas, Tex., registered dietitian Barbara Gollman. "Taste, confusion, and time have been viewed as the biggest obstacles. However, these obstacles can be conquered with a few practical changes that fit individual lifestyles, tastes, and preferences."

Almost any time is the perfect time to take control of food choices, get physically active, and start a healthful lifestyle--for a lifetime. The sooner you invest in your health, the greater the benefit. Here are some ADA motivation boosters to get you out of the "I know I should, but" rut:

Make lifestyle changes with a friend or family member. A partner increases the enjoyment factor of physical activity and healthful eating.

Enlist support. Your family and friends can help you keep on track. People who have the support of family members, particularly a spouse, are more likely to manage their weight successfully. Watch out for those who attempt to sabotage your efforts. It might be helpful to join a support group.

Please yourself. Remember, the most important reason to maintain your healthy lifestyle is you.
