Suzanne Mettler's article about tax expenditures ["20,000 Leagues Under the State," July/August 2011] highlights a major issue about which most in the progressive and conservative communities are completely unaware. I work at a company providing environmental modifications for people with disabilities and the aging, and I was shocked when I realized that the majority of our publicly funded customers are wealthy. The reason is that the programs that fund the modifications are restricted to homeowners. In other words, those with no equity or mortgage are ineligible.

A cleverly written but ultimately disingenuous and demagogic article. The author betrays herself by quoting Senator Russell Long about tax expenditures: "That label don't bother me.... I've never been confused about it. I've always known that what we're doing was giving government money away."
