The Systems Engineering Division mission is to promote the widespread use of systems engineering in the Defense Department acquisition process in order to achieve affordable, supportable and interoperable weapon systems that meet the needs of the military users and to provide a forum for the open exchange between government and industry of ideas and concepts, and develop a new understanding of a streamlined process.

The division is supported by the Office of ASD, R & E(SE). Active committees within the Division, which highlight its key focus areas include: Systems Engineering Effectiveness, Education & Training, Modeling & Simulation, Quality & Reliability Assurance, Life Cycle Support, Open System Architecture, Integrated Diagnostics, Software, Automated Test Systems and Interoperability.
