Re: "Emptying the Cages" (December/January issue): No farmer wants to treat animals cruelly. The real issue is that farmers, unless they have lots of animals, often cannot make enough income to cover their bills. If one becomes a mega farm there is safety in large herds of livestock. We need to make sure the food we eat comes from smaller farms, where the bills can be paid. Is the consumer willing to pay more for small farmers to stay in business?

Cage-free chickens sound ideal. But what would PETA say when free-range chickens are slaughtered by foxes, hawks, or other predators? Chickens are in cages for...
