LAURA BERNER is a first-year student at Stanford Law School in Palo Alto, Calif., where she's a member of the Environmental Law Journal and the Environmental Law Society, and is helping to organize a conference on oceans this March. A 1997 graduate of Bryn Mawr College with a B.A. in biology, Berner will be our first legal associate in memory who is licensed to pilot large sailing vessels on the high seas. She spent a nautical undergraduate semester sailing between Florida and Honduras, and then worked for several years as a captain and first mate for the schooner Liberty in Boston and Key West. She also has spent a number of summers as a landscaping supervisor in Vermont and New Hampshire.

INGRID SCHUPBACH is a second-year law student at Harvard, where she serves as executive editor of the Harvard Environmental Law Review, and has been working since the beginning of the summer on bankruptcy issues for Professor Elizabeth Warren. During the same period, she has interned with the Civil Division of the U.S. Attorney's Office in Boston, where she is focusing on civil enforcement. Schupbach is a 1997 graduate of Yale University, and a comparative literature major. She holds a black belt in karate, enjoys designing simple web pages (she reports), speaks fluent French, is a native German speaker, and can carry on a conversation in Italian.
