IN MEMORIAMGordon Paul Miwa
Born May 29, 1947, Gordon Paul Miwa, 60, of Guilford, died April 9, 2008. Miwa earned his bachelors degree at Princeton University, living in Russia and Mexico during his undergraduate years. After a stint teaching history in Philadelphia city schools, he obtained his law degree from Antioch College. After several years in California, Mexico, and Washington, D.C., he settled in Hawaii, where he developed a successful law practice. Upon moving to Vermont, he opened his own practice in Brattleboro and served as a Vermont Public Defender. He is survived by his mother, a sister, and a daughter.
Hon. Louis Peck
Born December 24, 1918, Hon. Louis Peck, 89, died May 8, 2008, in Berlin, Vermont. Justice Peck earned his law degree after he returned from World War II, in which he served as a paratrooper. Peck served for many years in the Vermont Attorney General's office before ascending to the Supreme Court in 1981. He served on the Court for ten years, earning national fame for refusing to step down from the bench at the age of 70 as was then required by the Vermont Constitution.
