Policy Statement

A fire district commissioner is an elected official. As such, his or her attendance at the meeting of the board of fire commissioners is necessary for the proper administration and delivery of fire service within the district. Moreover, according to the oath taken, every commissioner shall perform his or her duties to the best of his or her ability. Accordingly, attendance at the meetings of the board of fire commissioners is required unless an absence is excused.

No fire district commissioner may have more than four unexcused absences from the meeting of the board of fire commissioners within a 12-month period.

Excused and Unexcused Absence

An excused absence from a meeting of the board of fire commissioners occurs when all six of the following factors are present:

1) Advance notice of non-attendance.
