These pictures were taken in Rio de Janeiro, but could easily come from any of the world's large cities where one of the wealthy minority's byproducts is a social gulf of misery. Living under the most extreme conditions, these children have no time to develop dreams for when they grow old. In fact, most of them cannot even tell you their age.

But do social conditions explain it all? No. In the same family a boy who prefers to live by the whims of the street has a brother who chose to make a life selling fruit at traffic lights. Are they, perhaps, at the edge...
