Nolen's extensive research and personal interest in the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa fills the pages of her book with riveting personal histories. To add an even more personal touch to this already heart-wrenching book, she has included photographs in each of the twenty-eight chapters. Each of these stories, she explains in the introduction, represents 1 million of the 28 million people infected with HIV in Africa.
