I am a little surprised that Alexandra Ellerbeck appears to join The New York Times attorney in mourning the loss of the "singularity of voice that gave news organizations their authority and power" ("The Press Under Fire," June/July issue). For one thing, I question how far that condition existed in much of our history. For another, to the extent that it did, it silenced other voices and left many stories untold.

The long decline of U.S. journalism, which was far advanced before the advent of social media, stems in large part from the failure of those with economic power to let other stories be told...
