The holiday season is filled with tradition. However, one unfortunate holiday tradition in the U.S. is an increase in drunk driving. A national survey--by responsibility.org, a not-for-profit funded by a number of America's distillers--shows that 63% of citizens do not know the legal limit of 0.08 blood alcohol concentration for drunk driving, which is the law in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Moreover, 64% of respondents report they rarely or never use alternative transportation options--like ride-share, taxis, or public transportation--when they go out socially.

"Educating the public on the law and how to make informed decisions is especially critical during the holidays due to the spikes in drunk driving," says Ralph Blackman, president and CEO of the Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility, Arlington, Va. "While it is certainly everyone's own responsibility to make sure they get home safely and responsibly, it takes all of us. So, if you think a friend might have had too much to drink, step up and step in to make sure he or she doesn't drive drunk."

The survey also found that 81% feel confident in social settings to help a friend or guest who may have overconsumed get home safely. Some 54% say they actually have stopped somebody from driving or getting in the car with a person who had...
