With family gatherings and parties with alcohol, the holidays can be a stressful time for people recovering from addiction. "We are finding a lot of people are coming out of treatment at this time of year," says 23-year-old Devin McCrossan, cofounder of Constellations Recovery, Westchester, N.Y., a Sober Living Home. "During the holidays, families want to be close to their loved ones, but they may not want their family members home yet."

He offers three ways to stay grounded in recovery at this time of year: Stay close to your network. This can include attending 12-step meetings, working with other individuals who are struggling, meditation, phone calls with accountability partners, and helping others. "If you find yourself in a situation In the holidays that makes you uncomfortable, remove yourself from that situation, get centered, and connect with other Individuals who are going through recovery. There are so many people who are going through recovery so you will find individuals who have a lot of time and experience. Staying close to those individuals definitely helps to get you through some of those difficult times, especially If you are new to recovery."
