StateStats: "If you've seen one legislature, you've seen one legislature.".

That's a saying often repeated at NCSL, as it's widely recognized that while the nation's states and territories certainly share many similarities, they also differ greatly when it comes to processes, operations and procedures.

The profiles that follow offer a look at areas in the legislative institution that range from party control and constituents per district to percentage of female legislators and base salaries. And, with summer upon us and travel reopening, we've also included ideas for visiting each state and territory during the warm-weather months (of course, check each destination for current operating schedules as COVID-19 restrictions may still apply).

SOURCES AND NOTES

* Legislature by gender, party control, seats per chamber, constituents per district, base salary, limit on session length, term limits, length of term and next general election year: NCSL data.

* Population: U.S. Census Bureau.

* Constituents per district:

* All House districts in these states are two-member districts. Note: In states with mixed multi-member districts, district population is for single-member districts. District population is calculated by dividing the number of seats into total 2020 population counts to determine the ideal district size.

* Base salary:

* Maine: $15,417 for the first regular session; $10,923 (estimate) for the second regular session.

* North Dakota: $537/month starting July 1, 2022.
