Hometown: A Michigander by birth, I've called Park City, Utah, home for the past quarter century.

Role: Legislative fiscal analyst, Utah Legislature

NCSL involvement: You name it, I've probably done it. I'm currently staff vice chair of the Standing Committee on Budgets and Revenue.

Years of legislative service: 24

What inspires him: "I'm a sap for anything remotely patriotic, and I'm inspired by people who make others' lives better."

Why did you choose to work at the legislature?

After working in budgeting on the executive side of the federal government, I wanted to be where the action (and power) is. Legislators have plenary power to appropriate. Executives can block spending, but they can't initiate it.

What skill or talent are you most proud of?

I can plan one mean vacation! (Or more.)

What's the best advice you were ever given?

Learn the scientific method and use it every day to solve problems.

What's one thing you love about your state?

Five national parks--and many more hidden gems.

What are you currently watching?

"Better Call Saul." (Season Six starts now!)
