Sri Aurobindo and the New Millennium by R.Y. Deshpande, published by Aurobharati Trust, Pondicherry, India, 340 pages, price Rs. 150, (1999)
Dr. Deshpande's Sri Aurobindo and The New Millennium is a timely and insightful book that points us to Sri Aurobindo and the Mother as the Avatars of the New Age.
Sri Aurobindo and the Mother incarnated on Earth to establish the pathway by which the present configuration of Man will take a quantum leap to more assiduously approach that which has been seeking to express itself through the travails of Nature. The times and environment we find ourselves in, having been set up by protagonists such as Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru, and Tagore, in the Indian context, for instance, are ones in which we seem to be missing Life's Goal. Thus, we have as results the likes of Amartya Sen's "Welfare Economics", which would establish social harmony through allotments of welfare to underprivileged classes. Rather than create an environment in which the innate creativity in individuals can express itself, and rather than allow each individual to rightly express his individuality, we will instead allot sums of money to these impoverished, to thereby create social harmony.
Yet, as the author reminds us, we are of the substance of immortality. Should not then, that reality be allowed to express itself? Should not then the beautiful pathways that lead to Life's Goal be trod upon?
The two Leaders of our assured journey have set up a unique pathway to Life's Goal. Sri Aurobindo's extraordinary work, Savitri, based on the Mahabharata legend of Savitri, is that revelation. Deshpande's insights into Savitri are amongst the most insightful and penetrating to ever be put into words. A portion of his book presently under review focuses on Savitri. It is truly the vehicle that will propel us into the New Age. Savitri is the autobiographical account of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother's own tapasya, battles and conquests, and creation of pathway for the rest of Humanity. The mystery of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother is itself made clearer in Savitri; so too is the place of Man, of his soul, and of his great spiritual and material destiny.
In the rush of life, we have seized on compromised goals and compromised means. Sri Aurobindo has come and through his vision and his work has recreated the context of Life. He has revealed the Framework within which all Life is to unfold, find and exceed itself. Further, he embodied in himself that which Life...
