ON A ONCE-CONTAMINATED INDUSTRIAL SITE in Lynn, Massachusetts, there now stands a small cluster of residential homes. But before the doors could open for five first-time homebuyers, barrels of dangerous chemicals and asbestos-laden materials had to be removed and contaminated ground beneath the site had to be cleaned up. When Jim Hamilton, Managing Director of CLF Ventures, began advising the city of Lynn on the technical and legal aspects of the cleanup, national awards were far from his mind. "We wanted to show that there is value in land that has been neglected for so long. Rather than swallowing open space with another subdivision, we can reuse land that has already been developed and transform it into much-needed housing," he explains.
