I was somewhat troubled by Senator Tammy Baldwin's statement that student debt is a defining issue of her generation ("Sentenced to Debt," by Scot Ross and Mike Browne, November issue). That seems to imply a rather narrow view of who is in her generation. Less than 30 percent of Americans have bachelor's degrees and more than 40 percent have never been to college at all. It seems to me that although the debt burden is cruel, the greater problem is the lack of access.
