America has long served as a magnet for people around the world who wanted a new and better life for themselves and their children. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Europe was the departure point for millions of people fleeing poverty, mistreatment, discrimination, starvation, and war. In more recent years, millions of people from Spanish-speaking countries in the Americas have come to the United States. The result is that Hispanics have become the fastest-growing minority in a country with a population that is increasingly multiracial.
