NATIONAL RANK

New York has the most foundations, with 6,747 of the nation's 46,832. Nationally, foundation assets totaled $385.1 billion in 1998. North Carolina's share was 2.1%.

GRANTS

Educational programs received the most from Tar Heel foundations, $131 million, in 1998. For the first time in a decade, social services received more than health care and hospitals.

COUNTY RANK

More than 92% of North Carolina's total foundation assets are in 10 counties. Foundations in these counties made grants totaling $331.2 million in 1998.

TYPES OF FOUNDATIONS

North Carolina's 884 independent foundations, which start with an individual or family gift, gave away $272.2 million in 1998. Its 97 corporate foundations gave $56.2 million, and its 16 community foundations, $58.8 million.

LARGEST FOUNDATIONS

North Carolina's top 10 foundations have 62%, or $5 billion, of the state's total foundation assets.
