With the fall semester starting up and educational attainment having a strong connection to income level, the personal-finance website WalletHub conducted an analysis of 2016's Most & Least Educated Cities. In order to locate where the most educated Americans are choosing to settle, WalletHub's analysts compared the 150 largest U.S. metropolitan statistical areas, across nine key metrics--from the percentage of adults aged 25 and older with at least a bachelor's degree to the educational attainment gap between women and men.

The most educated cities, starting at No. 1, are Ann Arbor, Mich.; Washington, D.C.; San Jose, Calif.; Durham, N.C.; Madison, Wis.; Boston, Mass.; San Francisco, Calif.; Provo, Utah; Austin Texas; and Seattle, Wash.

The least educated cities, beginning at the bottom, are McAllen, Texas; Brownsville, Texas; Visalia, Calif.; Bakersfield, Calif.; Modesto, Calif.; Fresno, Calif.; Hickory, N.C.; Lafayette, La.; Beaumont, Texas; and Salinas, Calif.
