The Small Business Administration (SBA) provides information and resources for those considering starting a business and those already in the trenches. In 2007, the agency approved more than 110,000 loans totaling more than $20.6 billion. New strategies target the lifestyles of today's entrepreneurs; in 2007, the agency introduced the Small Business Primer: Strategies for Success, a free, online training course designed to assist would-be or early entrepreneurs. Now the course garners more than 6,800 participants each month.

Utah has more than 236,000 small businesses, according to the SBA. Extremely active in the local business community, the Utah District Office can supply a library of comprehensive business materials and instruction on successful financial management and marketing. Information about the technical aspects of starting a business, such as securing trademarks and properly adhering to government regulations, is also available.

Small Business Development Centers

On the local level, Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) provide quick access to SBA materials. Eleven SBDC offices serve the state of Utah, covering cities from Blanding to Kaysville. Funded by the SBA, the Governor's Office of Economic Development and the state's educational institutions, the SBDC offices provide information and counseling to strengthen and support new business endeavors. Entrepreneurs can find low-cost help writing a business plan, planning an operations budget or other startup functions. For those still in the brainstorming phase, the SBDC can help determine the feasibility of an idea and assist in finding funding resources. The goal is to provide the business guidance and education entrepreneurs need to continue on as the backbone of Utah's economy.
