Kodiak Cakes is one of the fastest-growing companies in Utah, but they made it to number nine on our list by marketing something slow: recipes passed down for generations, firewood split with an axe, flapjacks cooked over an open fire.
That's why, for this month's cover shoot, we gathered around a campfire with the company's cofounders, Joel Clark and Cameron Smith and--despite the 90-degree heat--had them don flannels and make flapjacks over a blistering hot cast iron skillet.
Kodiak Cakes sells nostalgia, plain and simple. What began with a boy selling heirloom pancake mix from his red Radio Flyer wagon, evolved into a company focused on melty smores, cozy cabins, and warm Woolrich blankets. And now they're one of the fastest-growing companies in the state.
