Signs of spring may bring pain.

Are you noticing the signs of spring everywhere but in your dog's step? Warmer temperatures usually bring out the best in man's best friend, but increased springtime activity also can bring pain to dogs suffering from arthritis, cautions Pfizer Inc. Animal Health, New York.

"An estimated 11,000,000 dogs--or one out of five--suffer from arthritis, and it affects dogs of all sizes, breeds, and ages," explains Ernie Ward, chief veterinarian of North Carolina-based Seaside Animal Care. "Subtle changes in your dog's behavior may be an indication that your [pet] is in pain."

Dogs suffering from arthritis first feel spring's warmer temperatures as pain in the joints. Common signs to look for include:

* Stiffness in the morning. This is one of the earliest signs a dog is in pain, especially if the animal tends to bounce back and regains energy as the day progresses.

* Hesitation to exercise or decreased stamina. As arthritis affects the joints, dogs in pain are less likely to be active and will lie around the house.

* Refusing to go up or down stairs. Dogs suffering from arthritic pain may seem stubborn, opting to stay put and in greater comfort.

* Reluctance to jump in the car. Dogs typically leap at the first sound of jingling keys; if man's best friend resists a ride, discomfort could be the reason.
