SHREDMILL is a unique new family of milling cutters that can carry either round inserts with a serrated cutting edge or regular round inserts.
Both inserts have a protruding cylinder on the bottom. The serrated insert has four indexing orientation options and the round insert has eight. When very deep cavities are machined, chip evacuation (even with air blow) is very problematic due to chip shape, weight and size. In deep cavities there is tendency for long chips to become trapped and then they are prone to be re-cut. When using SHREDMILL, small chips are produced, which have a fewer tendency to be re-cut.
The serrations on the insert's cutting edge were designed to overlap, providing a "fully effective" cutter configuration. Large cavity depths with long tool overhang may cause vibration and instability.
The SHREDMILL with its serrated non-continuous cutting edge is ISCAR's solution for efficient deep cavity milling. By using SHREDMILL instead of round inserts, 3 to 4 times larger depths of cut can be machined, or overhang can be substantially increased.
