The International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) starts its eight-day stand at McCormick Place in Chicago on Sept 6. Manufacturers will be unveiling their latest and greatest in new products and technology in grand style. There are a lot of lunches, dinners, and hospitality suites. To many visitor's delight, exhibition booths increasingly are taking on that European flavor and serve refreshments to customers and potential customers. Some have give-aways; others employ pretty models to pass out literature. It's an almost party-like atmosphere. You have the opportunity to see people you haven't seen since the last show in 1998. With all the hoopla generated, it's like Christmas in September. Although it's all work and the feet hurt from overuse, spirits are high.

It's festive. But make no mistake, it is big business. Many manufacturers--especially the bigger guys that make machine tools and tools and inserts--spend big bucks to show off their wares in the best light. Some exhibitors put out more than $1 million to stage and man their selling stands.

IMTS will even be home for those eight days for me and the staffers of Tooling & Production. We'll be busy covering the news made there so we can report it in our October issue.
