Volume one in a two-part story of the American Revolution, Rise to Rebellion gives readers the events leading up to the war from the perspectives of Ben Franklin, John Adams, George Washington, and Lieutenant General Thomas Gage. Others are heard from as well, such as Abigail Adams, Thomas Jefferson, John Dickinson, John Hancock, Paul Revere, William Pitt, and Thomas Paine. Shaara relies heavily on the participants' own words from letters, speeches, and documents. As a result, the novel feels more like a you-are-there history than like the fiction it is.
