Born Calvin Edwin Ripken Jr. on August 24, 1960 in Havre de Grace, Maryland, Mr. Ripken holds many distinctions and accolades in professional baseball. However, it is his breaking of Lou Gehrig's record of 2,130 consecutive games played on September 6, 1995, that has secured his place as a sports legend and made him baseball's "Iron Man." On September 20, 1998, Mr. Ripken ended his own streak with 2,632 games played.

Retiring after an impressive 21 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, Mr. Ripken has become a legend in the community as well. In 1991, he and his brother Bill founded Ripken Baseball, Inc. after their father, Cal Ripken Sr., passed away as a venue to continue their father's legacy of baseball instruction. In 1999 in recognition of his outstanding career, The Babe Ruth League, Inc. honored Mr. Ripken by changing the name of its largest division from "Bambino" to "Cal Ripken Baseball." Worldwide more than 700,000 kids 12 years old and younger play Cal Ripken Baseball.

During the Opening Session, Mr. Ripken's fine example of winning in the face of adversity and his legendary iron-will commitment to excellence will serve as inspiration to the hundreds of corrections professionals in attendance.
