This is historical fiction mixed in with the supernatural, set in the 10th century in an Irish abbey. Alden, at 17, is on the verge of becoming a monk, with the desire to work copying manuscripts. The dramatic events of the novel take place in just a few days: the town and the monastery are invaded and pillaged by Vikings, and Alden has met a strange young woman who is pulling him away from his commitment to monastic life. Alden and Lana find a way to combine their gifts to help the villagers rid themselves of the invaders. These gifts are eerie, and they fear others will interpret what they do as witchcraft. Lana has been trained as an herbalist and a midwife; her knowledge of plants is profound, and she is part of the ancient tradition of herbal...
