Dear Section Members:

I have the privilege of serving as your 2014 Editor-in-Chief for Big News, the newsletter for the Solo and Small Firms Section. Just as our Section is different in style from other Sections, Big News is different from the newsletters for other Sections. The members of our Section practice in every area of the law, and what binds us together are the special rewards—and the special challenges—of practicing as solo practitioners or in small firms.

Our first article is "Insider Trading: Theories of Liability, Common Defenses, and Recent Cases" by Angela Machala (a new contributor). Angela reminds us of the basic theories to pursue claims against insiders, and then ties them to the exciting headlines of the day. In his article entitled "Evolving Requirements of Patent Notice Letters and Complaints," David Abel (another new contributor) discusses newly adopted statutes and pending state and federal bills to address another problem about the headlines we have all read—patent trolls (or the more politically correct "Non-Practicing Entities").

In my first article for Big News, my colleague, Dana Meepos, and I give what we hope will be a useful "Primer on the Uniform Fraudulent Transfer Act." We discuss the basic policy underlying the Act, as well as the key elements and concepts to consider when analyzing whether your client has a claim under the Act, and understanding what defenses one may be facing in his or her efforts to collect on a debt from a debtor who will go to the extreme not to pay his debts.
