Enzymatic assays are based on the catalysis reaction of transforming ethanol to acetaldehyde and on the correlation of the rate of conversion of coenzyme nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide to nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide hydrogen with ethanol concentration. These tests are done on serum or plasma and, therefore, are not done on whole blood. The use of serum or plasma will cause the test result to be 18% +/- 3% above whole-blood readings done in crime labs by a GC/MS. These assays are available in kit form.
