At one time, it was common practice for a retail store to lease or license one of its departments to a specialist in that line of merchandising. For example, the Smith Department Store may license the Jones Company to sell shoes, hats, cosmetics, or luggage in its store. The Jones Company might operate facilities for the sale of these items in several stores in the city. Although this practice is less common today, variations of this concept are still in use.
