In intellectual property cases, personal jurisdiction may be present for one cause of action—for example, patent infringement—but may be questionable or absent for another—such as an unfair competition claim. The doctrine of pendent personal jurisdiction may be used in such an instance to allow the entire dispute to be heard in one court. This doctrine is frequently applied:

when a plaintiff brings a state claim together with a federal claim that is covered by a nationwide service of process provision, but the defendant is beyond the reach of the forum state’s long-arm statute for purposes of the state claim and is not subject to general jurisdiction in the forum state.
