A. (§8.2) Change Order Procedures

Construction contracts usually contain a provision to deal with changes in the scope of work. See American Institute of Architects (AIA) Document A201-1997, General Conditions of the Contract for Construction (15th ed.), Article 7. Generally, the owner must approve scope and price changes in writing before performance of the work. Hundreds, if not thousands, of cases have addressed issues raised by these clauses. See C.P. Jhong, Annotation, Effect of Stipulation, in Private Building or Construction Contract, That Alterations or Extras Must Be Ordered in Writing, 2 A.L.R.3D 620 (1965).
