Drug checkpoints are distinguished from sobriety checkpoints in that some individualized suspicion is required before a motorist can be stopped; otherwise the stop would be unconstitutional. In City of Indianapolis v. Edmond,531 U.S. 32 (2000), the police set up a drug checkpoint based on a written plan that stopped a predetermined number of motorists.
