Employers’ efforts to deal with potentially violent conduct may implicate many other legal concerns. For example, employers may engage in some forms of search or surveillance, such as searching bags and purses of entering employees or using surveillance cameras, to prevent weapons from being brought into the workplace and to deter crime generally. Such efforts can give rise to invasion-of-privacy claims. These can generally be neutralized by clear announcements of the search or surveillance policy, eliminating any reasonable expectation of privacy.
