Subpart L of the general industry regulations—covering
29 C.F.R. §§ 1910.155 through 1910.165—contains requirements for fire brigades (private fire departments and industries fire departments) and all portable and fixed fire suppression equipment, fire detection systems, and fire or employee alarm systems.

While an employer is not required to have a fire brigade,
29 C.F.R. § 1910.156 contains the requirements for the “organization, training, and personal protective equipment of fire brigades whenever they are established by an employer.” Section 1910.156(a).

The portable fire extinguisher standard, 29 C.F.R. § 1910.157, applies to the “placement, use, maintenance, and testing of portable fire extinguishers provided for the use of employees.” Section 1910.157(a). There are...
