C. (§26.12) Grounds for Granting

Rule 29.11(a) allows the trial court to grant a new trial “upon good cause shown.” The court may grant a new trial to remedy essentially any reversible error that can be asserted on direct appeal or collateral review, such as an involuntary confession by the defendant, misconduct by the prosecutor, or even trial counsel’s ineffectiveness.
