There are two types of contempt, civil contempt and criminal contempt:

• Civil contempt is remedial in nature and involves the imposition of a sanction to compel compliance with a court order for the benefit of a litigant. Teefey v. Teefey, 533 S.W.2d 563, 566 (Mo. banc 1976)

• Criminal contempt is in the nature of punishment for the disobedience of a court order, defiance of the court’s power, or disruption of the court’s function. State ex rel. Shepherd v. Steeb, 734 S.W.2d 610, 611 (Mo. App. W.D. 1987)
