Removal actions are characterized by their urgency and duration. There are three types of removals:

1. Emergency responses
2. Time-critical removals
3. Nontime-critical removals

Emergency responses are short-term actions, one day to three months, requiring immediate removal of hazardous materials. Time-critical removals are situations in which EPA must begin clean-up activities within six months of the discovery of hazardous materials.
