In In re Winship, 397 U.S. 358, 368 (1970), the Supreme Court extended the protections of In re Gault, 387 U.S. 1 (1967), discussed in §3.1 above, to include “the constitutional safeguard of proof beyond a reasonable doubt” when a juvenile is charged with an act that would constitute a crime if committed by an adult. This standard of proof has been adopted in the following cases:
