Section 16 Acceptable Medical Source

The SSA requires evidence from "acceptable medical sources" to establish the existence of a medically determinable impairment. "Acceptable medical sources" are:

· licensed physicians (medical or osteopathic doctors);

· licensed or certified psychologists (including qualified school psychologists only for establishment of mental retardation, borderline intellectual functioning, and learning disabilities);

· licensed optometrists (only for measurement of visual acuity and visual fields);
