A. (§16.13) Necessity for Valuation

A participant’s interest in a defined contribution retirement plan is almost always stated in the form of an account balance as of a particular date. All qualified plans must report total plan activities to each participant at least annually. See ERISA (Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974), Pub. L. No. 93-406, 88 Stat. 829, 29 U.S.C. §§ 1001–1461:

ERISA § 101(a)(1), 29 U.S.C. § 1021(a)(1)

ERISA § 102(a), 29 U.S.C. § 1022(a)

ERISA § 104(b)(1), 29 U.S.C. § 1024(b)(1)

If requested in writing by a plan participant or beneficiary, the plan administrator must furnish a statement that indicates, on the basis of the latest available information, the participant’s or beneficiary’s total accrued benefits and total nonforfeitable accrued benefits, if any, or the earliest date on which benefits will become forfeitable. 29 U.S.C. § 1025(a).
